INTRO TO KAYAKING 12TH/13TH JULY

My wife and I went on holiday to New Zealand 18 months ago and while there enjoyed a guided tour of Milford Sound by sea kayak. We enjoyed the whole sea kayak experience so much that we decided it was time for a career change and do something a little more exciting than the old 9 to 5.

We had a chat and decided that we really liked the idea of becoming kayak guides or instructors. Having no experience behind us we knew this would be a tall order but was willing to give it a go. Having trawled the Internet for a while we were becoming a little confused with all the different levels of training required and a bit confused as to which step to take next. We was also not too keen on many of the well known kayaking companies that offered coaching in large groups, as we felt we wouldn't receive proper coaching and value for money. We had just about given up when at work (I'm a postie), I was sorting the mail when I came across a postcard from getafix.com I decided to write the web site down and have a look on it when I got home. The rest as they say is history.

I sent Leo an email detailing our experience and aspirations and was very pleased with the response that I received. Rather than give us the hard sell, Leo explained that it would be more beneficial to us to try out the 2 day Introduction to Kayaking course that he had set up, in order to see if kayaking was really the sport that we wanted to do. We decided to book ourselves onto the course in July and was not disappointed. We stayed at Ffynnon Wen and was made very welcome and was pleased with the standard of accommodation.

Leo arrived promptly to meet us on the first morning of the 2 day course and made us feel at ease straight away. He gave us a quick brief as to what was in store for us over the 2 days and off we went. After a short drive we arrived at our destination for the day and was then given all the necessary equipment that we required. The day involved a journey on a canal with lots of coaching and guidance as to the correct way to handle a kayak. With a few laughs and the odd dodgy joke along the way, this turned out to be an excellent way of learning the fundamentals of kayaking. We then returned to Ffynnon Wen for a lovely dinner and a much needed rest.

Day 2 was white water time and a journey along a river. WOW!!! What an amazing day this was. The scenery itself was breathtaking and the kayaking was awesome. Leo was brilliant in giving us very clear instruction and very personal tuition.

All in all we had 2 amazing days kayaking and couldn't have wished for a better introduction to the sport. We came away knowing that when we decide to kayak again we will definitely sound out Leo for our next step on the kayaking ladder. He's a top man and made the experience all the more enjoyable.
